Podcasts : Point 2 Point Episode 21: Grant Dalgliesh and Columbia Games
Posted by Jason on 2007/4/15 11:15:40 (2269 reads)

Point2Point Episode 21

Another SuperSized Episode for your consumption! Jason and Scott answer some feedback, discuss their online gaming adventures, and, then move into their interview with Grant Dalgliesh, Heir to the Columbia Games, er, fortune.

They talk about Columbia's history, Columbia's future, along with all of those gnawing questions all gamers have about Columbia (for instance, why a "vote" page instead of a preorder page?).

All this and another gamer rule? You bet!

Not to mention that it came pretty quickly on the heels of 20. The more the merrier! Great job guys.

Great show, as always...

Another good thing about some of the Risk variants you were discussing at the top of the show is that they have timing mechanisms! For instance, in Lord Of The Rings Risk (which is out-of-print and getting tough to find now) there is a ring (an actual, gold, metal ring) that moves across the board and when it leaves the board, the game ends.

I'm not a huge Risk fan (though I (like most of us) played the hell out of it as a kid) but these new additions do improve the game enough for me to want to play them once in a while now.

Blast! And me here at work without my trusty ipod!

So far I've listened up to the interview. I'll save the rest for my walk home tomorrow.

So far, so great. And i'm still here; just mostly lurking these days.

In the list of games produced by Columbia, I don't recall Dixie and Eagles being mentioned. Those are very interesting quick abstract wargames played with cards. Columbia has rules for integrating these games with Bobby Lee, Sam Grant and Napoleon.

GMT's "Sun of York" (P500 list) is also based on these games.

Good point. And I just picked up Eagles today (the FLGS got it in with a Columbia order that didn't include the copy of Liberty I'd been thinking about buying). I'd've liked to hear a bit about it.

P.S. Jason, don't feel bad about how you pronounce Dalgliesh. The P.D. James episodes of Mystery have left me forever pronouncing it Dog Leash. I'm sure no one with the name appreciates this!

Stalker? Number two fan I could have lived with, but stalker?

BTW, I liked this ep. The interview with Grant was really good. I have not yet picked up my first Columbia game yet, but maybe at Origins this year. Still considering Wizard Kings, but the random expansion still has me wary.

I am looking forward to your Combat Commander review. Tom and Sam from TDT picked Tide of Iron over Combat Commander. I wonder how it stacks up to ASLSK.

ASLSK --

It was said with love. I love the fact that you're our number one contributor, and, really, probably our number one fan. YOu are a GREAT supporter of the show, and it was meant to be no more demeaning than calling my friend John my ASL Life Partner.

It was a joke, and I hope it didn't hurt your feelings. When I was editing, I almost cut it because I didn't want you to think I was being serious.

I'm sorry and will be glad to retract in the next ep. if you'd like.

Jason

No hurt feelings at all. I feel the love.

I figured it was tounge in cheek. Thanks for confirming that for me though.

Any chance of nailing Ken Dunn down for an interview? I would happy to mention it to him if you wish.

I'll come up with an "official" title for you along the lines of "Number 1 Fan" and "Friend of the Show." You've definitely earned that.

I'll think of something, and it won't be the S word.

Also, with all of the events this week at my Alma Mater, and the scarier connotations with that term now, I will probably never call anyone a stalker in jest again. Almost makes me physically sick to think about it.

Glad we're okay, ASLSKfan.

And a preview of our next review -- don't sell your copy of Starter Kit just yet!

You're a Hokie, Jason?

Dude, I'm sorry about what happened there; all we can hope for is that something good comes out of it.

We both are. Jason and I met at the VT game club back when we both still were into role playing games. When you hear us talk about PseudoCon, that is essentially a school reunion of our VT game club and new people we have met along the way. The first PseudoCon was an excuse to use up the money our club had collected in dues over 4+ years.

GO TECH!!!

I am not going to let some psycho ruin my memories of the place. It was a great place to go to school when I was there and still is today.

Thanks, Mike and ASLSKFan,

Yes, I'm a Hokie. And proud of it! Scott's eloquence comes from his brusqueness, but I agree with him. No way that guy will change what I feel about a great place and a great school.

The one thing that does change how I feel is how our students, faculty, alumni, and community have reacted. I've never been more proud of being a Hokie.

No way can I take number one fan away from the Tool Man!

Can there be more than one FOS at a time? I would hate to have Joe's FOS title revoked.

I think the whole nation is in mourning over the events at VT. I know my family and I are. I agree, something good really needs to come from this.

Hey guys, long time listener, first time poster...

Love the show! I especially liked the in-depth Napoleonic Wars show you did. Great stuff, looking forward to more like that!

Anyway, quick question. You mentioned living rules and an updated rule set for Shifting Sands but I haven't been able to find it on the MMP website. Do you have a link for those?

Thanks, Phaedrus (aka Tim in Maine)
