Re: Point 2 Point 36: Alan Emrich and the Future of Warga...

I am late to the party. I don't know what as come over me. Oh, yea... I have been playing lots of euros (more on that later).

I listen to this podcast when it came out and I believe it to be one of the best. I will not restate all the praise listed above. Alan, if I ever am in California (I live in Georgia) I will take you up on seeing your class. I truly hope your business model works. I look forward to getting a change to play your games.

Back to my euro statement. My game group plays mostly euros but I am enjoying them. Even, coop games like Pandemic where we share cures to a diseases that could kill everyone in the world instead of heart tokens (LotR) I like Eurogames and own a good number of them. I like the clean quick rules, the fact that my family will play them, the nice components, the quick play time. But I have found this in a wargame, Conflict of Heroes. This game has short clear color rules, the components are beautiful, it plays very quick, and I can get my family to play it. Also, I own ASL, CC, ASLSK, etc… but this one is different enough to own it also. I agree with Moritz and I feel that too many of my wargames are the same. This one is different and is a lot of fun.

I play euros and wargames because they are fun to me. I have found as time goes on that what is fun to me changes from year to year. Even now I feel that I am shifting to wanting to play a monster wargame. I see good mechanics in all kinds of games that can cross boundaries and be used on the other side without tainting or destroying the other. I even believe that I have seen mechanics in recent party games that could be used in wargames (If you did not think I was crazy before, I am sure you do now). So, my wargamming friends embrace the eurogame it is your friend.

Hi,

I just finished listening to this episode. I also have to say this was a great interview. I love the philosophy of Victory Point games - low complexity but high fun factor! I immediately ordered Waterloo20.

I wish Alan all the success that he desires in his adventures!

I'm listening to the show for a second time now. I usually have to do that to pick up on parts I missed.

Upon my second listen-thru, I noticed that Alan didnt sound too interested in competitive gaming. Interesting. He likes to go to conventions, but not play in tournys. A man of infinite sensibility!

Jason, Scott,

this was IMHO your best episode so far. Really liked the interview with Alan Emrich and Moritz asking how the future of wargame design will look like.

Go see Alan Emrich at CSW Expo, when he sells another invisible game box.

So, whats up next on the show ?

Point 2 Point 36: Alan Emrich and the Future of Wargaming

Point2Point Episode 36

In this mega-super-sized episode (3 1/2+ hours!), Jason and Scott cover all those things they need to before heading off to WBC. They respond to some feedback (and offer some tactical advice), discuss their recent gaming (including Pseudocon), and discuss their respective WBC schedules. Jason interviews Alan Emrich, a legend in wargame design, about his history in gaming, Victory Point Games, his teaching, and his history in computer gaming. Then Moritz lays down a call to all wargame designers and Jason and Scott weigh in. What's NOT in this show??? The only thing they don't do is fit their show in its normal 2 hour time frame!

FAB: Bulge Challenge Match

On Consimworld, I took up a challenge by Kevin Garber to play FAB: Bulge. People were saying it is too hard to win with the Germans and he wanted to demonstrate how that is not true. We are just starting Turn 3 and I can already see he really knows what he is doing. I believe he was a play tester for the game, so that makes sense.

Kevin is doing a move by move AAR so you can follow along and learn good German play and some sketchy Allied play. He already had a nasty breakthrough on me.

I tried to make hyper link, but something is funky here and it will not do it. So you will have to cut and paste the URL. Just make sure you do not cut and paste the """". This was way more annoying then normal.
